Walter, Master Fishmonger, started as a trainee fish salesman in the “old” Billingsgate Market. By the mid 1980’s, he was operating four successful retail shops in London and a wholesale fish business in the New Billingsgate Market. Walter Purkis & Sons were chosen as the London winners of the Channel 4 “Gary Rhodes Food Hero”, were recognised as the Best Fishmongers in London by Slow Food London Awards and won the ‘Most popular shops’ on the Time Out Love London Awards.
